Buckethead Pike Reviews

A review of Pike 72 'Closed Attractions' by Buckethead, released August 13th 2014

Good evening everybody, today we're back for a gentle crawl down guitar hero Buckethead's Pike album series, with Pike 72 'Closed Attractions'. So, let's begin. Woo!!

Released August 13th 2014, Pike 72 was the 2nd of 6 albums released that month, with one of the more weirder looking and memorable Pike album covers to date. Nice.

The 5 track album kicks off with the title track, 'Closed Attractions'. A slow crawl chill song, the guitar tone is glorious and the 6 minutes fly by. The guitar work is subtle but fabulous. Plenty of feeling, plenty of emotion. A great song and a great way to start the album.

Track 2 is the 8 minute 'Mecha Slunk Roller Coaster'. And whilst the title might lead you to believe this is gonna be Buckethead in shred mode, far from it. Another chill song, the guitar tone is again mesmerizing. Excellent rhythm, especially mid song. It's dreamy, engrossing. Great.

Track 3 'Stump Cars' comes next. Gently kicking off with some nylon string noodling, this one will give you flashbacks of Buckethead's classic album 'Colma'. Extremely soothing and an excellent understated composition. Just Buckethead and his guitar. Once again, great.

Track 4 is the 4 minute 'Lantern Alley'. Whilst the previous track was one to sooth and relax, this is a gentle feel good pick me up. Once again it's subtle brilliance. There's nothing flashy on display, with Buckethead using emotion and feeling to bring out the feels. Good stuff.

The album concludes with it's longest track, the 9.5 minute 'Antler Hill'. Reminiscent of it's opening track, this is a slow crawl chill song. And what can you say that hasn't already been said so far? Subtle, reflective, soothing. Whatever emotion you're feeling inside, this song will bring it out of you even if you're not ready for it to come out. Beautiful.

Overall, when it comes to feeling and emotion, Pike 72 is one of the best pike albums out there. The flow of the album is excellent and every song delivers something different whilst sticking with it's overall chill vibe. I have to admit that not all of Buckethead's slow chill albums do it for me, but this one definitely does.
