Buckethead Pike Reviews

A review of Pike 23 – Telescape by Buckethead, released August 16th 2013

Good evening everybody, today we're back with another deep dive into guitar hero Buckethead's Pike album series, with Pike 23 'Telescape'. So, let's begin. Woo!!

Released August 16th 2013, the 6 track album 'Telescape' has a run-time of just over 32 minutes, making it one of the longest Pike albums of the series.
And as the cover art indicates, its a trip through space which at times, turns into an outer body experience.
Kicking off with a gloriously heavy punch to the face 'Pyramids Rising'

And if Track 1 was a punch in the face, then Track 2 'Between Sea and Sky' is a sledgehammer between the eyes.

Track 3 'Land Drawings' follows suit with more of the heavy, excellently complemented by the drums and for me, up to this point is the albums best track.

And if 'Land Drawings' was the best track up to that point, Track 4 'Launch Pad' blows it completely out the water. The song is driven along with one of the coolest riffs Buckethead has ever produced. And includes some excellently weird overdubs and cut-ins. Fantastic.

And we go from strength to strength with Track 5 'Telescape 1'. An epic 10.5 minute offering, its heavy, dark, eerie and awesomely constructed.
With everything from werewolf noises to machine gun fire. Telescape 1 really is like nothing you've ever heard before, and when we're talking about Buckethead, that really is saying something. An outstanding song and my personal favourite from the album.

The album closes with Track 6 'Telescape 2'. And if I told you that the first 3 minutes of the 7.5 minute song repeats the same riff over and over, you might think that sounds boring. Well, think again. It's an excellent riff that builds in intensity leading to a 3 minute solo to end what is a fantastically well constructed and enjoyable album from start to finish.

In the end after adding up my rating for each track, It came to a whopping 78.5%, which Id categorize as 'Very Good'. Pike 23 is easily accessible, there's not a weak track on the album and as far as the albums flow and enjoyment, it's one of the better Pike albums Buckethead has ever produced.
